   family of botanists, physicians
   Antoine de Jussieu (1686-1758) was born in lyon and was a physician and professor at the King's Garden (today National Museum of Natural History). He is the author of Traité des virtues des plantes and was made a member of the Academy of sciences in 1715. Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777), brother of Antoine, was born in Lyon and was a director at the King's Garden. in 1734, he imported two cedars of Lebanon from England, one of which has always stood at the Botanical Gardens in Paris. He was made a member of the Academy of sciences in 1739. Joseph de Jussieu (1704-79), the brother of Bernard and Antoine, was born in Lyon. A botanist and traveler, he visited south America, accompanying charles de la condamine, and introduced numerous varieties of ornamental plants to Europe. Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu (1748-1836), born in Lyon, was the nephew of Antoine, Bernard, and Joseph. He produced a study that serves as the basis for the natural method of the classification of plants (Genera plan-tarum secundum ordines naturales disposita, 1788) and was named to the Academy of sciences in 1795. Adrien de Jussieu (1797-1853) was born in Paris, the son of Antoine-Laurent. He was a botanist famous for his work entitled Embroyons monocotyle-donés. He was named to the Academy of sciences in 1831.
